So that took a good bit less time than I was afraid it would -- I was expecting that the problem was likely to be either our phone line or the modem in my computer, either of which would have been a pain to repair, but it turned out to (apparently) be Stanford's modem bank, and sometime around 10pm last night they got around to fixing it.

In any case, I now have net connection again.
