A small question....

Is it a sign that I've been in California too long when I'm making sausage gravy for breakfast and reach for the whole-wheat flour?

no. making sausage gravy at all seems to me entirely UNcalifornian. and you didn't mention the wheatgrass juice you were sipping with your breakfast. :)
