So. As likely very few of you know, I'm legally a Virginia resident (for a variety of reasons). Specifically, Ninth Congressional District.

This means that I have the distinct pleasure of calling Rick Boucher my representative. I call this a distinct pleasure, because I've noticed that when a certain California senator (and others) are sponsoring digital "copyright" nonsense that's to the benefit of large corporations at the expense of personal rights, it seems that rather often the news stories (even in CA!) quote Boucher as making a well-reasoned and informed statement against them.

Further, about a month ago, he introduced this bill. Entitled the "Digital Media Consumer Rights Act", he says it will "reaffirm and reinforce the Fair Use doctrine in this digital era". It's only a small step, but of small steps are big things made. Read the overview, and write your new congresscritter to tell him or her to support it and stuff like it.

Anyhow, it appears Boucher was re-elected today. Practically a 2/3 majority.

This, I think, is a very good thing.

At the Library & IT Association forum I attended last month, one of the speakers told us to remember Boucher as one of the good guys as far as protecting our digital rights is concerned.
