Speaking of laundry....

Why is it that, when I set the timer to tell me when to go down to fetch the laundry from the dryers and shift in the next load ... if I set it to the actual time it will take, I always find myself in the middle of something and it takes me five or ten minutes to get to a pleasant stopping point, but if I set it to five minutes early to adjust for that, I always find myself at a stopping point when the timer goes off?

Also, the general suckiness of Things, which is the same on a smaller scale. (A friend of ours used to have a poster on his wall that said in large unfriendly letters "LES CHOSES SONT CONTRE NOUS", and it's become a household word)
