So, suzimoses and I were discussing spices and looking at various things in our spice rack, and I happened to look at the ingredients in the "Chinese Five Spice" mix: Anise, cinnamon, star anise, cloves, ginger.

To which my immediate reaction was, "Those are cookie spices!"

Now I want to try making some Chinese-five-spice cookies.

i read this in a completely different context, thinking to myself "spouse in the poly plural doesn't take an 's', does it".

Possibly it's a plural of a collective; like "peoples" for a group of different cultures or "fishes" for several different species. I wonder what different sorts of spices there might be?
