Winds are going to be consistently from the North through Sunday, Weather Underground says.

Conclusion: This smoke isn't going away any time soon. Bleah.

When the Santa Cruz Mountain fires had just broken out, I wound up on a plane home from Seattle -- eagerly anticipating an entire summer of being a total homebody -- with a guy whose house had been evacuated while he was out of town. He was headed to his mother-in-law's place when we landed, and wasn't sure he'd ever be going *home* again.

Meanwhile, even though I no longer have any real ties to communities in the Mississippi flood plains, I've been reading about how the river's been climbing the steps of the St. Louis arch, and remembering how shaken the entire city was during the last go-round, in 1993.

At this point, for me, the smoky air serves mainly to remind me to be glad that my family and I are well out of range of flames, and also of floodwaters, tornadoes, and all the rest of what's out there right now.
