lilairen and chorus mentioned, this one seems notably interesting. So:
Is the name you have now the same name that's on your birth certificate? If not, what's changed?
Yes and no. My birth certificate and other legal documents have my first name on them when they must; everything else leaves it off, leaving merely "Brooks Moses". It's simpler that way, rather than having to always point out to people that my middle name is the primary one.
On the other hand, my middle name has always been my primary name, so even that's not really a change.
Why were you named what you were? (Is there a story behind it? Who specifically was responsible for naming you?)
My parents named me, ignoring the advice of my father's mother -- she wanted me to be named with my grandfathers' first names. Now, "Wilbur Lattie" is probably a fine name, but ... not exactly what they were looking for, a fact for which I am greatful. Apparently she suggested using middle names when this was turned down, but "Maurice Fisk" doesn't exactly have a ring to it either.
"Brooks" came from a couple of sources; it's one of my great-great-grandmothers' maiden names, and it's also a name of a mountain range in Alaska. I think there may have been another source as well, but I've forgotten.
As my mother tells it, they'd settled on that part quite early on, but couldn't find anything that they liked to go with it, and it came down to the nurse holding the certificate to fill out and saying, "Well?" So they ended up using my father's first name, but it didn't flow right as a middle name, so they made "Brooks" my middle name, and put it as a first name. And that was that.
If you could change your name (first, middle, and/or last), what would it be?
If I were going to change it, the obvious change would be to put "Brooks" as my first name; it turned out to be a fair bit more hassle than my parents had realized. But it's not really that much hassle, and I like my name the way it is -- I wouldn't want to give up having my father's name as part of mine, and it really doesn't flow right if I reverse it.
Are there any names you really hate or love? What are they and why?
Offhand, I can't think of any in particular.suzimoses and I have occasionally talked about names for future children (not with any specific plans of having said children now, I note!), and have always been flummoxed by being able to come up with vast numbers of names for girls that we like, but having trouble finding even one for a boy that we like. Clearly, we shall just have to have daughters.
I'm leaving off the Kalabarians question, though; not really in the mood for that one (aside from having a very slow net connection at the moment).

I have just paused to realize that the ticket for my flight to GA this week is in the name "Manny" but my ID is all spelled out. I wonder if that is going to be a problem? Hang on (rummaging)--eureka! My Library of Congress reader ID card is made out to Manny. Take that, TSA!
