I was out of the house for about five hours this afternoon. In that time period, the alias that I use as my Usenet "from" address got 228 copies of the latest virus mailing. While I was pondering this, a dozen more came in.

That email alias is no longer connected to an account.

The sudden silence almost has echoes.

Glad it's not just me. I got an annoyance of viruses yesterday, but as it's my main adress, all I can do is not grab anything over 100K.

As I've got dial-up access and didn't recognise what was going on in time, I'm majorly put out.

Yup; I'm on dial-up access, too -- which means I'm quite glad I told my email program not to get anything over 100k before downloading that big batch of them -- I figure it would have taken a couple of hours, at least. And, at this point, they're coming in (but luckily being bounced)faster than I could download them if I kept it going continuously -- but I hope that's a signficant anomaly; it doesn't sound like anyone else is in straits quite that dire.

Good luck with not getting overwhelmed with them!

I know what you mean; I got several hundred overnight, plus a notice from my ISP saying I exceeded my disk allotment. [I asked their forbearance during the current virus attack.]
Really annoying.

Quite annoying, yes. I can look at the mail server logs, so I can watch the messages come in and bounce off the "unknown address", even though I'm not actually receiving them -- and they've been doing two or three per minute all day; if anything, it's still getting worse rather than better.

I think, rather than merely forbearing while accounts get overfull, your ISP ought to be filtering these out at the mail server....
