I know that we tend to mock them a bit (along with the Avocado Green ones), but I just came across a picture on Tumblr that shows some of them in context, and in context it's clearly the right color for them to be.

Actually, now that I think about it, it's possible that mocking Autumn Gold appliances was a 1990s thing and I'm just way out of date with it and they've now hit a point where they're alluringly retro instead. But anyway. I have to share, regardless, because this kitchen is so great and I love it.

Behind a cut-tag, because large. And eye-searing. You've been warned.

Autumn Gold appliances in context.

(Also, note the ease with which one can knock the pillow off the bed and have it roll into the kitchen sink. That's quite a practical architectural decision there.)

For the first time in my life, I wish I were completely color-blind.

I think that while there was a certain amount of complaint that they were ugly, one of the major complaints was that they were only the right color in that one context. One of the reasons '80s and '90s appliances did not switch to another set of colors but rather to neutrals is that people became very, very aware that they would want something that worked in more than one context, because they would want to change their context faster than their fridge. So "but it worked in context" kind of misses the actual criticism, which was "this is very limiting."

I have a harvest gold sink and toilet in my bathroom, and they are not the worst colors ever, but they are much more limiting than the standard white porcelain that we put in the new bathroom we put in the basement. Any time Tim wants a different set of towels, rugs, wall paint, etc., it's fairly cheap and easy to do this, and the toilet will be a random white toilet, not a glaring problem. Whereas in my bathroom, I have only come up with two color schemes, total, ever, that will work.

I have a classic blue bathtub and toilet in my bathroom, and while it's a perfectly acceptable blue, it's also very limiting in terms of anything I might want to do to the bathroom.

I kind of like the kitchen scheme, although I have just spent an awful lot of minutes trying to think of a background that works with it that is not that terrible wallpaper. Maybe a spring green, like the chairs.

Has anybody done appliances with quick-swap faceplates, for cheap cosmetic updates? Maybe a marketing opportunity!

I thought it was a sofa -- surely a bed would have more covers on it. But yes.

(I'm rather fond of the purple and pink, to be honest.)

My kids are with you there. And if be delighted to encounter this kitchen in an Airbnb, but I don't want it in my house. ;-)

I was around in the '70s and I never saw any kitchen that looked anything like that.

Maybe this is one of those experiences where, if you remembered it clearly, you weren't experiencing it fully?

I can't help feeling this is more aspirational than anything anybody ever did, but I have to admit I kind of like the kitchen. I would like it in the winter. In the summer I think it would be a problem.

I had an apartment with harvest gold appliances and a harvest gold *shag* rug. This was in the late 80s. The rug was much much worse than the appliances.
