So what does it say about me that I get a spam titled "Can You Afford to Ignore Small Caps?" and my first thought is one that immediately leads to thinking that spam would be a very strange way of advertising expert versions of fonts?

Stocks -- specifically ones with market capitalizations less than a half-billion dollars.

I knew that from really carefully reading all the information about my retirement account investment thingy last year.

I can't remember what the account is called, mind you, but I remember what small caps are.

I had the same thought, but then 'small caps' in the sense they mean isn't an especially common term in the UK - at least, not in my circles - and I used to to edit a computing magazine where small caps were part of our style guide (although I forget what for now).

Yeah, it strikes me that my reaction may be significantly influenced by time recently spent learning the style conventions of legal publishing in the US.

I think I have previously encountered the stock term somewhere, but I definitely wouldn't swear to it.

You are weird. Obviously the correct first reaction to such a title is to think, "religious spam". As in, "Yes, indeed you cannot ignore it if someone STARTS TALKING TO YOU IN SMALL CAPS". Well, that was my reaction, anyway :-)
