So, I just got an advertisement in my email inbox, from a company I've had some interactions with (so it's not really spam), about a local seminar they're presenting. The body of the email is:
With your current e-mail settings, you receive only text messages. To deliver your message in a concise and visually appealing manner, we have created this message for you in HTML. To view your personal message through the Web, visit the link above. If you cannot click on it, you can copy and paste it into your Web browser.
This seems to be somewhat missing the point of "advertising"....

I was discussing family email with my mom at one point, and said, "Did you get the one with the giant purple letters?" (Mom didn't send that one, she has better taste.)

I cheerfully informed her that in my email browser, all letters are the same size regardless of who sends the message, and none of them are purple. She wanted to know if this was an email browser she could use. ;)

I get terse "your email client doesn't support HTML" messages from here and there every so often. My reply to this is, yes, I know, I LIKE it that way. If you can't tell me what you want to tell me in words, no amount of flash and sparkle and purple letters will sell me on the matter. Deal with it.

God Bless Agent.

Seen those from time to time...

Nowadays my email client will support html. Very, very basic html, with no running of scripts, and no fetching of images from elsewhere, and no giant fonts. This is a deliberate design feature. :-)
